A rather interesting development took place earlier this week that could liven up the January 6 Select Committee hearings.
Steve Bannon is already facing two counts of contempt against Congress for refusing to testify before the January 6 Select Committee.
He was not testifying due to Trump claiming executive privilege.
Trump’s attorneys dropped a bombshell this week in announcing that Trump was not including Bannon in that claim.
Bring in Steve
After learning that Trump was not covering Bannon with his EP claim, Bannon has now reversed his position.
Bannon’s attorney wrote a letter to the committee explaining that Steve Bannon would now comply.
It stated, “President Trump has decided that it would be in the best interests of the American people to waive executive privilege for Stephen K. Bannon, to allow Mr. Bannon to comply with the subpoena issued by your Committee.
“Mr. Bannon is willing to, and indeed prefers, to testify at your public hearing.”
Trump wrote Bannon a letter over the weekend explaining why he was revoking his EP claim.
He wrote, “When you first received the subpoena to testify and provide documents, I invoked executive privilege.
“However, I watched how unfairly you and others have been treated, having to spend vast amounts of money on legal fees and all of the trauma you must be going through for the love of your country and out of respect for the office of the president.
“Therefore, if you reach an agreement on a time and place for your testimony, I will waive executive privilege for you, which allows for you to go in and testify truthfully and fairly, as per the request of the unselect committee of political thugs and hacks.”
I would be willing to wager this will not be a pleasant experience for the committee, therefore, I do not expect to see Bannon paraded on national TV.
That has been the playbook so far for Democrats on this front.
They put witnesses on the stand in prime time that can help their cause and those that will debunk “facts” presented by the committee are relegated to testifying behind closed doors.
It just continues to pile on the skepticism about how legitimate anyone can possibly take this committee.
