Moderate Democrats not named Sinema or Manchin have a big decision to make.
Do they back the filibuster rules change, do they stay quiet, or do they support Manchin and Sinema?
Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) has already made his decision… he is making another hard turn to the left.
Dangerous Move
It was only yesterday that I did an article on the risk Schumer is taking a big gamble on demanding a vote to put everyone on the record regarding the filibuster.
In that report, so-called moderates like Kelly were the exact Democrats I was speaking of in terms of Schumer putting them at risk.
They all know they don’t have to support keeping the filibuster in place because Manchin and Sinema are holding firm and have not even blinked on this front.
However, pushing a bad position could expose people like Kelly to their more conservative base.
I can assure you, the people of Arizona, at least for the most part, did not put Kelly into office so legislation could be rammed through without bipartisan support.
Kelly does not seem to fear any repercussions, however.
The Arizona Democrat is now pandering to one specific demographic, stating, “We’re seeing that now, as voting rights legislation remains blocked while partisan politicians work to undermine Arizona’s successful vote-by-mail system and create more barriers to vote.”
He added, “If campaign finance and voting rights reforms are blocked again this week, I will support the proposed changes to pass them with a majority vote.
“Protecting the vote-by-mail system used by a majority of Arizonans and getting dark money out of our elections is too important to let fall victim to Washington dysfunction.”
One of Kelly’s possible opponents in his next election pounced.
Blake Masters stated, “Of course Mark Kelly was going to cave to Biden and Schumer, he always does.
“By nuking the filibuster, Senator Kelly shows that he’s a danger to Arizona and to America. He is disgusting and he’s got to go.”
This is a huge deal for Kelly because he ran as a moderate even though there was pushback as to his agenda during the campaign.
Voters were warned he had a far-left mindset even though he was campaigning as a middle-of-the-road guy.
Coming out in favor of breaking the filibuster confirms that, and Kelly could find himself out of a job very soon.
