A man that has given two decades of his life as a first responder has been murdered.
Stockton Fire Department Captain Vidal “Max” Fortuna, sadly, is dead.
He was shot while fighting a blaze early Monday morning.
Tragic Death
Fortuna has served his community for 21 years.
Running into burning buildings when everyone is running out was his way of life.
He had answered a call for a dumpster that had been set on fire outside of a building around 4:45 a.m. Monday morning.
While firefighters were working the blaze, shots rang out, with Fortuna being hit.
He was rushed to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.
The alleged shooter, Robert Somerville, was arrested within minutes of the shooting and taken into custody by local police.
No motive has been revealed.
Stockton Firefighters 456 Union president Mario Gardea stated, “Max was the type of firefighter that showed up every day and never complained about his job.
“I don’t know many other firefighters who enjoy their job as much as he did.”
When Fortuna was not fighting fires, he was volunteering at his church.
Big Valley Grace Community Church posted, “Max was a gentle and humble man who loved God and exhibited many characteristics of Christ.
“He served faithfully for many years and always brought his joyful attitude and strong work ethic to our ministry. He will be dearly missed.”
Mayor Kevin Lincoln stated, “Please join me in praying for the family of Captain Max Fortuna and our Stockton firefighter community, as we grieve this loss.
“This is a sobering reminder of the sacrifices our public safety personnel make daily to protect and serve our community.”
The local police department also offered condolences on Twitter…

We can only hope the liberal prosecutors in California see fit to punish this man appropriately for taking the life of a true hero.
