A Columbia drug cartel boss pulled off the impossible (well, not impossible in corrupt Columbia).
Juan Castro, better known as “Matamba,” broke out of prison while awaiting extradition to the United States.
Castro walked out of the La Picota jail in Bogota after obtaining a guard’s uniform.
Manhunt Underway
Castro’s bold escape was caught on video surveillance footage of the prison.
While it did not show how he obtained the guard’s uniform, it showed him strolling out the prison’s front door.
When guards did the cell checks the following morning, they saw that Castro had escaped.
Reports broke later that it appeared as though a guard had been bribed to give his uniform to Castro.
That guard has reportedly been arrested.
The prison director and all 55 guards on duty during the escape were also suspended.
After this latest escape, Colombian President Iván Duque has vowed to overhaul the entire prison system.
Castro has been in prison since May, when he had been arrested on drug charges.
He is reportedly responsible for 20 percent of the cocaine traffic from southwest Columbia.
