Austria Announced Opposition to Ukraine’s EU Membership

Ukraine is hoping to bolster its standing by being admitted to the European Union.

Knowing the implications of such a move, countries with ties to Russia are starting to back off the idea of adding Ukraine.

Austria being the most recent, stating that it does not believe Ukraine should be permitted to enter the EU.

Sorry, No

Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg spoke at the 14th European media summit, stating that Austria does not believe that Ukraine should denoted as “candidate status” come June.

His main sticking point is the neutrality of Ukraine.

He stated, “We don’t belong to any military alliance and we don’t want to.”

Rather than being admitted to the EU, Schallengberg would prefer that Ukraine go about a different way of improving its ties with Europe.

Ukraine’s leadership was very disappointed with the statement.

Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Oleg Nikolenko responded, “Such statements also ignore the fact that the vast majority of the population of the E.U. founding member states support Ukraine’s membership.”
