It is official.
Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) has announced that she is seeking re-election.
She will face a rather significant uphill climb, already trailing the Trump-backed Harriet Hageman.
There is no race that Donald Trump wants his candidate to win more than the one against Liz Cheney.
Cheney has become a far more than just a thorn in Trump’s side, fighting him every step of the way.
She has also started echoing Democrat talking points, which has not helped her standing among conservatives in Wyoming.
Losing to Brian Kemp in Georgia hurt Trump, but it was something he can and will recover from.
If he loses this race to Cheney, it would be devastating and truly put his standing as the kingmaker in the GOP in question.
Right now, that should not be a problem.
One local survey found that only 14 percent of current voters plan to support her.
The same poll showed that 52 percent were already deadlocked in ousting her from office.
This is a three-way race, however, so there is room for her to still squeak by unless one opponent can dominate the field.
Right now, that opponent is the Trump-backed Hageman, who is polling at 56 percent, with Cheney at 26 percent, and state Senator Anthony Bouchard at only 12 percent.
I have to believe that Trump and his political supporters are going to put significant pressure on Bouchard to get out of this race as it becomes more apparent that he cannot win.
The primary is scheduled for August 16, so Cheney has very little time to make up this ground.
Like other candidates Trump has backed during this cycle, Hageman was not always pro-Trump, having made some harsh statements about the former president, all of which will be used by Cheney in the primary and the eventual Democrat opponent if Hageman wins this primary race.
I honestly do not know very much about Hageman, but that will change over the next few weeks.
I do, however, know that Cheney and her family are political scum, and every trace of the Cheneys in our government needs to be removed.
