Rep. Madison Cawthorn Announces Divorce After 9 Months of Marriage

One of the new guns of the Republican Party will not be having a very merry Christmas.

Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) announced that he and his wife are divorcing.

Cawthorn has only been married for nine months.

Not What I Signed Up For

When Cawthorn got engaged, he was not a political figure.

That has changed rather dramatically over the last year.

Not only is he a freshman member of the House, but he is also a very high-profile member, which brings a lot of attention to the entire family.

The new Mrs. Cawthorn clearly did not expect the spotlight to be the family, as well as the abundance of scrutiny over every move.

Add to that the amount of travel, and she has decided this was not what she signed up for when she said “yes” to his proposal.

Cawthorn announced the divorce on social media on Wednesday night.

In part, he stated, “When my wife Cristina and I were engaged, I was not a member of Congress.

“I felt called to serve and we both agreed that I should run.

“Our victory was unprecedented, but overnight our lives changed.

“That change has been both hectic and difficult, it’s neither the pace nor the lifestyle we had planned for.”

His soon-to-be ex-wife was very gracious in announcing the split.

Cristina Cawthorn stated, “Madison is amazing – we’ve had an incredible journey together.

“Our marriage, like every marriage, has had its difficulties. The lifestyle shift into public life has been strenuous, and many aspects of the transition have been unexpected.

“I want to live in the world he creates, I just don’t want to be married to someone changing the world.

“While we have agreed to be apart now, we still have a great friendship and there’s no ill-will.

“Madison is a fighter – he will help save this country.”

We wish them both the best of luck in the next chapter of their lives.
