Teen Arrested for Murder Over Social Media Ransom Scheme

In February 2021, former correction officer Elias Otero, 24, was murdered.

Otero lost his life in a social media hostage scheme that went sideways.

On Monday, 18-year-old Anna Bella Dukes was arrested for murder related to this case.

Snapchat Gone Wrong

Most of us would probably agree that social media would never have been invented if we could go back in time.

It has taken over kids’ lives and resulted in more scams and idiotic trends than we can count, including people losing their lives.

In this case, Otera was the would-be ransom payer in the kidnapping scheme.

Otero’s brother, Nicholas, was allegedly lured into a meeting with Dukes.

When he arrived, three armed men, one of which was Dukes’ boyfriend, were waiting for him.

Nicholas was robbed of his jewelry and money, then he was taken to his brother’s house where the kidnappers had hoped to cash in on a ransom.

That, however, is when everything turned sideways.

When Elias came outside, he threatened the kidnappers, with one of them allegedly opening fire and killing him.

Dukes’ boyfriend, Adrian Avila, was the alleged shooter, and he turned himself in last month.

Dukes was taken into custody on Monday, with both now facing charges of murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, tampering with evidence, and conspiracy.

The victim’s mother stated, “Every day we wish that we get justice and, you know, someone to pay for what they did to him and knowing they finally turned themselves in, it just feels good that it’s not gonna go unsolved.”
