Rumors started to surface last week that House Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) was going to make a trip to Taiwan.
There was significant pushback from the White House at the time, advising against the trip.
Pelosi, however, would neither confirm nor deny the trip over security concerns.
Now China is getting involved, issuing an outright threat over the possible trip.
China was quite clear about its intentions if Pelosi heads to Taiwan.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian stated, “The Chinese side has made it clear to the U.S. on many occasions that it is firmly opposed to Speaker Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. We are fully prepared.
“If the U.S. goes its own way, China will certainly take firm and forceful measures to safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the United States should be held responsible for any serious consequences.”
Taiwan has also poked the bear, running air raid drills around the country in preparation for a possible attack by the Chinese.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has actually taken up for Pelosi on this front…
I have never been a fan of these trips because they accomplish little other than headlines for members of Congress on our dime.
I slammed Republicans when they went in April, and I will surely slam Pelosi on this front.
We do not need members of Congress to travel to Taiwan to send a message to the Chinese as to where we stand.
