Of all people to talk about a compromise on abortion, it was Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) that dropped a truth bomb on Democrats.
Democrats keep pushing the idea that the majority of Americans want abortion legalized while leaving out one key fact.
They do want it legalized, but they also want restrictions in place.
Cruz Drops Reality
Congress is about compromise and as I have stated many times, if Democrats were willing to be reasonable, they would have had their abortion legislation years ago.
The problem, however, is that Democrats want no restrictions and the ability to perform abortions right up to birth with no exceptions.
Had they put out legislation that represented the Hyde Amendment, it would pass.
That is actually what the American people want from Congress.
Every poll I have seen says the overwhelming majority of Americans want abortion legalized, but they want restrictions in place on how late into the term it can be performed, with the only exceptions being acts of incest, rape, or a health danger to the mother.
Cruz touched on this, stating, “Today’s modern Democrat Party has become radicalized on abortion.
“Today’s Democrat Party has said if you are Democrat and pro-life, get the hell out you are not welcomed in our party.”
He also noted the career stance of many pro-life Democrats, including Judiciary Committee Chair Dick Durbin (D-IL), who never supported unrestricted abortions, to now backing “unlimited abortion on demand.”
Cruz then touched on what the American people as a majority want, stating that Democrats know that “unlimited abortion on demand up until the moment of birth, including partial-birth abortion with government funding, with no parental notifications and no parental consent, is supported by only a tiny minority of Americans.”

As I have stated many times, there is simply no way we will ever come up with a law on this that will make everyone happy, but we can reach a compromise that everyone can live with, even with some grumbling.
That will never happen, however, as Democrats are simply not willing to back off the idea of abortion being a form of birth control and from a conservative standpoint, that will never be acceptable.
