In October 2020, an appellate court overturned the death sentence issued to Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
There was outrage among many when the decision was handed down, but that may not last very long.
In a rather shocking move, the Department of Justice has petitioned the Supreme Court to look at the case in an effort to overturn the appeal and reinstate the death penalty.
Not a Liberal Stance
I say shocking because the death penalty is usually associated with conservatives and often fought on the liberal side of the aisle.
The idea that Merrick Garland has approved this petition is going to floor many on the left.
In its petition, the DOJ stated, “The court of appeals improperly vacated the capital sentences recommended by the jury in one of the most important terrorism prosecutions in our nation’s history.
“This court should reverse the decision below and put this case back on track toward a just conclusion.”
We have yet to see a lot of outrage on the left, but that may be because they don’t even know this petition has been filed.
While most mainstream media outlets have reported on the brief, the story is buried, not appearing on most front pages.
When White House Press Secretary Andrew Bates was asked about the brief, he stated, “The President believes the Department should return to its prior practice, and not carry out executions.”
This is a clear indicator that Joe Biden is playing both ends against the middle.
While the DOJ seems to be carrying out some orders from this administration, Biden is still claiming the DOJ is acting independently of the White House.
That is a rather convenient stance to take on such a controversial issue.
