For the 15th time this year, a journalist has been murdered in Mexico.
This time it was Fredid Román, who ran the program called “The Reality of Guerrero.”
This appears to be a clear hit, as he was gunned down in his vehicle gangland style.
Bad Trend
This murder is only one week removed from the murder of independent journalist Juan Arjón López.
López was found just across the border in Yuma, Arizona.
An organization to protect journalists has warned that the lack of prosecution in these cases would only lead to more murders after the López murder.
They were clearly right.
Jan-Albert Hootsen stated, “Although some arrests have been made in earlier cases of press killings this year, an ongoing climate of impunity continues to fuel these attacks.”
Oddly enough, it is not journalists working for major publications that are in danger, for the most part.
It is people with smaller publications focused on particular aspects of government corruption and the cartels that are being targeted.
