Get ready for the outrage to begin.
Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has vowed a repeat of 2016 if the GOP gets back the Senate during a recent interview with Hugh Hewitt.
He has committed to blocking any Biden SCOTUS nominee once the election year begins.
Not Going to Happen
Traditionally, an opposing party in the Senate does not even consider a SCOTUS nominee during an election year.
The key to that statement is “opposing party,” because Democrats just about lost their minds when McConnell blocked Merrick Garland during Obama’s last year and pushed through Amy Coney Barrett during Trump’s last year.
Dems would have gone about their business the same way and everyone knows it, but that is the state of politics today… outrage for the sake of outrage.
Well, McConnell has done it again by giving Republican voters a reason to come out next November, vowing to block any pick during an election season.
He stated, “I think in the middle of a presidential election, if you have a Senate of the opposite party of the president, you have to go back to the 1880s to find the last time a vacancy was filled.
“So, I think it’s highly unlikely. In fact, no, I don’t think either party if it controlled, if it were different from the president, would confirm a Supreme Court nominee in the middle of an election.
“What was different in 2020 was we were of the same party as the president.”
McConnell also took a shot at the idea of Democrats packing the Court.
His comments will undoubtedly get under the skin of liberals because he gave a shout out to the very justice under pressure by progressives to step down.
McConnell stated, “You mentioned Justice Breyer. I do want to give him a shout-out.
“[H]e joined what Justice Ginsburg said in 2019 that nine is the right number for the Supreme Court. And I admire him for that.
“I think even the liberal justices on the Supreme Court have made it clear that court packing is a terrible idea.”
Get ready for sparks to fly on the left because these comments are about to bring a firestorm down on Breyer.
