Most top GOP candidates are in agreement that if Trump runs, they will sit it out.
When you look at polling, the only person close to Trump right now is Ron DeSantis, and Trump is deep into double-digits leading him.
Yet, Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, who almost nobody outside of Arkansas knows, says he will take on Trump if the former president decides to go again in 2024.
In What World
So, this is not about supporting or not supporting Trump, but wondering what the heck Hutchinson is thinking.
Even though he won a second term, Hutchinson is more or less despised in Arkansas right now.
I can guarantee you that if he could run for a third term, he would lose in the primary.
He made a hard left turn during his last term just to distance himself from Trump and it did not go over well at all.
Now, Hutchinson says he is “laying down the foundation” for a run just in case Trump announces.
He stated, “I want to be a voice for common-sense conservatism, and we’ll see how that resonates.”
Common-sense conservatism sounds good to me, but I can guarantee you that Hutchinson is the part of that equation that will not resonate with anyone.
He will get about as much interest as Rick Santorum did in the 2016 election, even if he is heads up against Trump.
