This week, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) sent the January 6 Select Committee into a bit of a tizzy.
McCarthy had done an interview earlier in the week discussing the committee, slamming its mere presence due to an anonymous report on Reuters.
Cheney, along with several other members of her committee, went ballistic after McCarthy’s statements.
Baseless Claim… or Is It?
Last month, Reuters published a report citing anonymous sources claiming that the FBI had found “scant” evidence of any coordination for the January 6 riot.
McCarthy, on the investigation and committee, stated, “The FBI has investigated this.
“The Senate had bipartisan committees come back.
“And you know what they’ve found— that there’s no involvement.
“But this is purely political in how Nancy Pelosi has handled this.”
That drew the ire of Select Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and Vice Chair Liz Cheney (R-AZ).
Together, they stated, “(McCarthy) has suggested, based on an anonymous report, that the Department of Justice has concluded that Donald Trump did not cause, incite, or provoke the violence on January 6th.
“When this anonymous report was first published, the Select Committee queried the Executive Branch agencies and congressional committees involved in the investigation.
“We’ve received answers and briefings from the relevant entities, and it’s been made clear to us that reports of such a conclusion are baseless.”
It is important to note that Thompson had a lawsuit against Trump that had to be rescinded in order for him to take his position.
Cheney’s anti-Trump stance is well documented at this point, including the fact she voted to have Trump impeached.
Point being, these two will never conduct this investigation fairly and have already decided to finger Trump for everything that happened on January 6.
Having said that, McCarthy dug his own grave on this front by speaking out too soon after January 6 before having all the facts.
Immediately after the riot occurred, McCarthy had stated that Trump “bears responsibility” in part for the events that occurred on January 6.
Now Democrats are throwing those remarks right back in his face.
Expect this back and forth to continue, especially now that McCarthy appears to be one of the additional Republicans targeted by this committee.
