Last week, House Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) announced that she would move forward with a House Select Committee on the January 6 riot.
At the time, it sounded as though she was going to only appoint Democrats.
That has since changed, with Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) being asked to join, a move called shocking by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).
Pelosi wants this commission to be taken seriously, so she needs it to appear to be bipartisan in nature.
For that to happen, she must have at least one Republican on the committee.
So, who does she choose? Arguably the most anti-Trump Republican in the House… Liz Cheney.
While Pelosi wanting her on the committee was not a shock, McCarthy was “shocked” she accepted an assignment from a Democrat.
McCarthy stated, “I was shocked that she would accept something from Speaker Pelosi.”
He added, “It would seem to me, since I didn’t hear from her, maybe she’s closer to [Pelosi] than us. I don’t know.”
That would be an understatement.
McCarthy also reiterated that he has nothing against such a committee, only the scope of the investigation.
He stated, “There’s so many failures along that way that happened the days before that allowed individuals to get into the building.”
Cheney tried to justify accepting the assignment from the opposing party leader, stating, “What happened on January 6th can never happen again.
“Those who are responsible for the attack need to be held accountable and this select committee will fulfill that responsibility in a professional, expeditious, and non-partisan manner.”
I would say that I agree with that statement right up until the last part because there is no way this committee look at this with neutral eyes.
They going into it with a conclusion drawn, then hoping to find a way to justify that conclusion with selective facts.
The only way we will ever find out who was responsible is if the scope of the investigation is expanded, which would put comments made the by likes of several Democrats, including both Kamala Harris and Pelosi, into the mix.
That is specifically why Pelosi will limit this investigation to January 6 and not the days, weeks, and months leading up to that day.
My best guess here is that Cheney just sealed her fate in the next election by taking on this assignment.
I will be astonished if she wins re-election.
