Hershel Walker had Donald Trump’s endorsement long before he ever even announced he was going to run.
It was actually Trump who encouraged Walker to run in the first place.
Senator McConnell (R-KY), who initially hinted that he would fight Trump candidates, has now thrown his endorsement behind Walker, for whatever that is worth.
Walker has immediately become the favorite among Republicans, but he lacked any big endorsements from the powers in the party.
That all changed this week.
Senator Thune endorsed Walker earlier and now McConnell has fallen in behind him, giving Walker the endorsement of the top two Republicans in the Senate.
McConnell had stated previously that he would not just rubber-stamp Trump endorsements but would only back candidates he thought were good for the party and that could win.
Even though Walker is very popular in Georgia, he does have some skeletons in his closet.
To his credit, Walker has never shied away from them and seems comfortable addressing these issues in an open forum.
The good news on that front is that if Democrats start throwing mud in Walker’s direction, it will only open the door to rehash the allegations made against Senator Warnock (D-GA).
McConnell must figure the party can get through this and deliver Walker in 2022 because now he is all in.
The Kentucky Senator stated, “I am happy to endorse Herschel Walker for U.S. Senate in Georgia.
“Herschel is the only one who can unite the party, defeat Senator Warnock, and help us take back the Senate.
“I look forward to working with Herschel in Washington to get the job done.”
Walker was receptive to the endorsement and thanked McConnell for “his commitment to bringing the party together toward the collective goal of defeating Senator Warnock.
“The Democrats have already said they will spend whatever it takes to keep Georgia blue.
“The stakes have never been higher — if we all work together, we will win next November, and take back the Senate.”
