There is a lot of debate over Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE) being set up by the FBI or trying to cover up a lie.
Regardless, he was convicted for making false statements.
After significant pressure from leadership on both sides of the aisle, Fortenberry has finally resigned his seat.
What Happened?
It is not often that a congressional member will get open support from both parties, but that is what happened with Fortenberry.
That did little to dissuade the outcome of his case, however.
Fortenberry’s campaign took an illegal donation.
When the FBI questioned him about the donation, he stated that at that time, he was not aware it was illegal.
The DOJ says otherwise, and he was eventually convicted.
Initially, he showed no signs of giving up his seat, but both Reps. McCarthy (R-CA) and Pelosi (D-CA) started to apply pressure.
Thursday night, Fortenberry succumbed to the pressure.
In leaving office, he stated, “It has been my honor to serve with you in the United States House of Representatives.
“Due to the difficulties of my current circumstances, I can no longer effectively serve.”
