China has made it quite clear that it will not tolerate athletes bringing up political issues at these Olympics.
The country has even warned athletes that they risk severe punishment if they dare to cross China on this front.
Instead of sticking up for the freedom of speech, however, House Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) is telling athletes to cower to communist China.
Shhhhhh…
I would think our government would take a firm stand against China on all fronts.
Instead of telling athletes to cower to China, why not offer open support.
How about telling China that if you touch any of our athletes, we will drop the hammer on you.
Quite frankly, while I usually do not support Olympic boycotts, if we were not going to offer complete support for our athletes during these games, then why send them there in the first place?
To that point, Pelosi, on Thursday, stated, “The People’s Republic of China is perpetrating a campaign of gross human rights violations, including genocide.”
Pelosi added that China will use the Olympics as an “attempt to distract the world from a decades-long campaign of abuse and repression.”
“Over the next two weeks, it is our urgent moral duty to shine a bright light on the many human rights violations being perpetrated by the host nation.”
She later added, “I would say to our athletes, ‘You are there to compete. Do not risk incurring the anger of the Chinese government, because they are ruthless. I know there is a temptation on the part of some to speak out while they are there. I respect that, but I also worry about what the Chinese government might do.’
“So again, participate. Let us celebrate from abroad and don’t risk thinking that there are any good intentions on the part of the People’s Republic of China’s government, because there are none.”
