The Democrats are pulling out the big guns.
House Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) headed to Rome this weekend for a private meeting with Pope Francis.
Her meeting with the Pope comes as the pontiff called on world leaders to act now on climate change.
Church and State
Make no mistake about it, the Pope is no longer a religious leader but a politician.
This meeting is a significant statement on several fronts.
First and foremost, there is the issue of California archbishops challenging whether or not Pelosi, Biden and other “catholic” Democrats should be able to receive communion considering their support for abortion.
In May, San Francisco’s Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone, who is the leader of Pelosi’s home diocese, stated, “We must never lose sight of this fact: In the last 50 years, in the United States alone, 66,000,000 babies have been murdered in their mothers’ wombs.”
Abortion, apparently, is not that big of a deal for Pope Francis, as he welcomed Pelosi with open arms, which will send a shock wave through Archbishop Cordileone from head to toe.
Secondly, it puts the Pope, and presumably his flock, behind Democrats on this issue.
To that point, Pelosi stated, “His Holiness’s encyclical Laudato Si’ is a powerful challenge to the global community to act decisively on the climate crisis with special attention to the most vulnerable communities.
“I expressed the gratitude of those working on climate action in the Congress for the immense moral clarity and urgency that His Holiness continues to bring to the climate crisis, and how we continue to cherish his address to the Joint Session of Congress in 2015.”
The Pope, in his address, stated, “To meet this challenge, everyone has a role to play.
”That of political and government leaders is especially important, and indeed crucial.”
“This demanding change of direction will require great wisdom, foresight and concern for the common good: in a word, the fundamental virtues of good politics.″
The Pope is clearly taking sides in this debate, which has absolutely zero to do with religion.
Keep in mind that Pelosi’s visit also comes when Americans are still stuck behind Taliban lines in Afghanistan and our borders are raging out of control, so I hope she has a nice little vacation in Rome.
