The January 6 Select Committee may have finally gotten the bombshell it needs to give Trump some real legal problems.
Politico dropped a report late Friday that could derail any hopes that Trump has of running for office again.
The report claims that Trump’s campaign was trying to push a fake electors list on Pence before the Senate could certify the electoral vote.
This is a HUGE Problem
Whether this was a Trump operative going rogue or with the knowledge of Trump will not matter.
As much as Trump has been pushing this narrative, this report will implicate him in the court of public opinion.
The Politico report identified Mike Roman, the Director of Election Day Operations at the time, as the man trying to get bogus electoral certificates into the hands of Mike Pence.
The plan was to use the certificates to fight the electoral outcome of the election.
Mike Pence’s office refused to accept them, so the plan was foiled.
The report narrows the involvement to two people, but that will matter little to news agencies.
If the plan was in place, most are going to believe that Trump would have had some knowledge of it.
Chairman Thompson, in issuing a subpoena on the matter, stated, “[T]he Select Committee is in possession of communications reflecting your involvement in a coordinated strategy to contact Republican members of state legislatures in certain states that former President Trump had lost and urge them to ‘reclaim’ their authority by sending an alternate slate of electors that would support former President Trump.”
The plan was flawed from the outset, as Pence was never onboard for challenging the results of the election, which is precisely the root of the fallout between Pence and Trump.
Pence may be testifying before the Committee, which will surely come up.
If he goes on the record on this, I do not see how Trump can recover.
Furthermore, this report, if verified, will be enough to scare a lot of people away from Trump for fear that he could have serious legal problems if he wins the primary election.
I said this before, but Trump and the GOP really need to consider this before he puts his hat into the ring.
Trump still struggles in mock election polls against Biden, and Biden is about as bad as it gets right now.
They have to decide if they want an election that will be a fight until the end with a very real possibility of losing or a runaway election and easy win with someone like DeSantis.
Trump supporters need to seriously consider the repercussions of Trump running and losing because it is a reality that could come to fruition if Trump keeps taking these hits.
