Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) made a strong stance supporting Roe v. Wade and against the new Texas abortion law this week.
Collins called the new Texas legislation “extreme, inhumane and unconstitutional.”
She also supported “codifying Roe,” which will not sit well with the conservatives in her home state.
Too Far?
Collins has a good mix of voters in her state, which is why she always has to walk a fine line.
Her stance against the Texas bill is not so much the problem here as it is her open support to codify Roe v. Wade.
On the new legislation and Roe, Collins stated, “I support codifying Roe.
“Unfortunately, the bill … goes way beyond that. It would severely weaken the conscious exceptions that are in the current law.”
Collins has been fighting for her life, but this may be her last term in office.
She had a bit of a scare in her last election and at 68, she may figure the next five years will be enough.
She still has the establishment’s support, which is why she won in 2020, but this new movement within the Republican Party does not like her at all.
It is tough to imagine Collins being able to fight off another challenge in her next election cycle.
