Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and his fellow Democrats just tried to pull a fast one and they got caught big league.
Schumer wanted to ram through the bipartisan infrastructure deal without the spending being completely clarified in the bill.
He also wanted to get this passed with Republican support so he can put through the reconciliation bill, but his little stunt backfired, leaving Schumer with a big plate of egg on his face.
No Way, Chuck
The bill that was headed to the floor was the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure deal.
Even though it was a bipartisan agreement, there was still some serious work regarding the actual spending in the bill.
Democrats being what they are these days, Senate Minority Leader McConnell (R-KY) vowed to block the bill until every I was dotted and every T was crossed.
So, when the bill went up for a procedural vote this week, it failed, getting only 49 of the 60 needed votes.
McConnell called this nothing more than a political “stunt” by Schumer.
He added, “Around here, we typically write the bills before we vote on them. That’s the custom.”
The bipartisan group of Senators working on the bill vowed to continue to hammer out the details so a legitimate bill can be put on the floor soon.
The group stated, “We have made significant progress and are close to a final agreement.
“We will continue working hard to ensure we get this critical legislation right—and are optimistic that we will finalize, and be prepared to advance, this historic bipartisan proposal to strengthen America’s infrastructure and create good-paying jobs in the coming days.”
Personally, I think the GOP should walk away from the table as long as it remains clear that Democrats will ram through a massive reconciliation package for everything they want not included in the bipartisan package.
If they want to spend that money, let them own it.
More importantly, if they will not negotiate in good faith, there is simply no sense in negotiating at all.
