You know you are desperate when you are willing to destroy your party to remain in power.

That, however, is precisely what Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is about to do.

Schumer has vowed to turn up the heat on the GOP regarding the voting rights legislation.

However, he risks exposing moderate members of his own party in both the Senate and House in the process.

Blow It Up

Folks, get ready for 2016 all over again, and I mean that in every way.

This may not be a presidential election, but Democrats are going back to their 2016 and 2020 playbook to try to keep power.

Schumer will now ramp up the rhetoric against Republicans for not wanting to back the Dems ridiculous voting rights bill.

In fact, the entire party has already started this.

Get ready for phrases like “the future of our democracy,” “the future of this country,” “voter suppression,” “keeping minorities down,” etc.

If you watched any TV yesterday, you heard all of this and more by Democrats.

The problem, though, is that they are also going after several members of their own party in both the House and Senate.

Democrats, by using this strategy, risk outing not only Senators Manchin (D-W.V.) and Sinema (D-AZ) but also at least a dozen other moderates in Congress.

The big statement by Schumer on this came on Friday, stating, “And if Senate Republicans choose obstruction over protecting the sacred right to vote — as we expect them to — the Senate will consider and vote on changing the Senate rules — as has been done many times before — to allow for passage of voting rights legislation.”

The problem… Schumer does not have the votes for this, and he will never get them.

I am sure that Manchin and Sinema are not going to budge on the filibuster, and there are several other Democrats that have not yet spoken up that feel the same way.

They may not oppose the filibuster being broken now simply because they know Manchin and Sinema are willing to take the heat.

However, if Schumer puts this up for a vote, and these moderates vote to break the filibuster, they could also be ousted from their seats by their moderate base.

This is just a gross miscalculation by Schumer, and it is one that I am positive will backfire, but he is very desperate, so he is willing to do anything to try to keep power.

Enjoy it while you can, Chuck, because you have a few days more than a year of calling the shots in the Senate.
