One of the major concerns for conservatives heading into the 2020 election was the future of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) if Biden won.
With members of the Democrat Party, most notably the Squad, talking about ending ICE, these concerns were very legitimate.
New Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has put a plan in motion, apparently with Joe Biden’s blessing, to make that happen, but he raised more concern on the right this week by stating he wants to make “significant changes” to ICE.
Smaller Role
If we are being honest, ICE has been reduced already, with its enforcement scope being all but eliminated under this administration.
We have seen both arrests and deportations by ICE dramatically drop even though we know the border numbers have increased.
Mayorkas recently stated that he has ordered a complete review of the agency and he expects substantial changes regarding the role of ICE when that review is completed.
Mayorkas recently stated, “I really am focused on it becoming a premier national security and law enforcement agency.
“I really want to elevate all of the other work [ICE] does and also ensure that its civil immigration work is well-focused in the service of the national security and public safety mission.”
If we read between the lines for the visions Mayorkas has for the agency, it would appear that deportations and arrests will only occur when individuals are deemed to be a national security threat.
This is a pretty sneaky move on the part of Biden and Mayorkas because they both know there would be complete outrage if the agency was completely eliminated.
Instead, the original mission of ICE will be tossed and redefined, all but abandoning border security in terms of stopping illegal immigration.
There is now little question that by the end of this administration, the term “illegal immigrant” may no longer exist… and that is terrifying to every conservative in this country.
