With Beto O’Rourke officially in the Texas gubernatorial race, polls are starting to fly.
Governor Abbott had some setbacks during the early days of the pandemic, but he seemed to have made a nice recovery as of late.
It turns out, actor Matthew McConaughey is still the favorite among voters in the state, as he is beating both O’Rourke and Abbott in a heads-up match in the latest Dallas Morning News/U of T survey.
Governor McConaughey
McConaughey had made some statements lately that I thought would have hurt him a bit more than they did.
It being Texas, his stance on abortion, at least I would have thought, would have hurt him a bit more with voters.
However, he recently came out against mandates, which obviously gained him back favor.
McConaughey is probably about as center as you are going to get these days, so that with her name recognition has him atop Abbott by eight points and atop Beto by 22 points.
The caveat is that McConaughey would have to declare a party affiliation, something he has been hesitant to do thus far.
That changes if McConaughey decides to run as an independent, as Abbott then wins with 37 percent to McConaughey’s 27 percent and O’Rourke’s 26 percent.
The one issue that McConaughey has not really spoken about is immigration, which will be a make-or-break issue.
He has managed to become a favorite in the race simply by whispering that he might be interested in entering the political arena.
McConaughey is very popular in the state, of that, there is no doubt at all.
However, he has managed to walk a fine line on some key issues thus far that will have to be clarified, which could dramatically change his polling.
If I were Greg Abbott, I would not exactly feel threatened by these results, at least not yet.
