Donald Trump has reportedly made up his mind regarding which candidate he wants to see take on Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) in the primary race.
According to The Hill, an anonymous source has stated that Trump will be backing Harriet Hageman.
This is a bit of a shocker to the current field, but we would expect a lot of movement very soon on this if the report is accurate.
There Can Be Only One…
The field for Cheney’s seat in the primary is already stacked, but it is about to get a bit more crowded.
To be honest, the biggest name in the field had his own controversy surrounding him, with State Rep. Bouchard.
He was, by far, the biggest fundraiser of the group, but Trump is wise to steer clear of him at this point.
Bouchard has the stigma of impregnating a teenage girl when he was a young man, a girl he later married, which would surely be exploited by Democrats.
There were several other possibilities that Trump had met with, most notably two veterans, but none of them were getting any real juice headed into this primary.
According to a report on Politico, Trump’s team is recruiting attorney Harriet Hageman to run.
Cheney, by far, is the one sitting Republican that Trump wants to see removed from office, so we would expect there was significant research done in deciding where his endorsement would land.
That endorsement is expected to come out very soon, but work is reportedly being done behind the scenes to get the other candidates to bow out to Hageman.
The only real chance Trump has of getting Cheney ousted will be in a head’s up match, as a saturated field would more than likely split the opposition vote and allow Cheney to win the primary and likely her seat.
We will continue to monitor this story to see if the field agrees or if they decide to stay in and fight it out.
