Governor Kay Ivey, a Republican, signed House Bill 272 on March 8, making it official.
Alabama is the 22nd constitutional carry state in the Union.
Governor Ivey signed the legislation almost immediately after it passed the legislature and made a statement on the decision:
“Unlike states who are doing everything in their power to make it harder for law abiding citizens, Alabama is reaffirming our commitment to defending our Second Amendment rights. I have always stood up for the rights of law abiding gunowners, and I am proud to do that again today.”
The NRA tweeted the news once it became official:
✅BREAKING NEWS: Alabama House & Senate PASSED NRA-Backed Constitutional Carry, Headed to Gov. Ivey’s Desk
One more step until…
➡️NO GOVERNMENT PERMISSION!⬅️— NRA (@NRA) March 10, 2022
However, no more government permission doesn’t mean complete anarchy.
NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre has said in the past that even he admits there should be some restrictions on weapons.
1) Bans on automatic weapons.
2) Restrictions on “bump-fire” rifle stocks.
3) A universal mental health registry to limit gun sales to the mentally ill.
